Quartet Variations
David Rubinstein
Composed 1994-2005.
for flute/piccolo, violin, cello and piano
Duration: 9 minutes.
This is an exciting tonal work that will be a plus on any chamber music program. Originally for flute and orchestra, the piece features equal interplay between the four players. Quartet Variations begins with a flute solo consisting of a simple C-major dominant seventh "theme" reminiscent of harmonic overtones. New harmonies are introduced, then follows a series of variations on the different segments of the theme. The intervals heard in the opening are transformed rhythmically. The piece concludes with a vivace based on the whole-tone scale used in the theme.
